The Blue Bridge — Blauwbrug

Named after a blue wooden bridge, built like a Paris original.

From the water

This is a historic bridge in Amsterdam. The bridge owes its name to a wooden blue bridge that stood here from around 1600, painted in the characteristic blue of the Dutch flag. It kept the name after 1883, when it was replaced by the spans of a new bridge inspired by the architecture of several of the bridges over the Seine in Paris, such as the Pont Alexandre the Third.

The story behind it

The Blue Bridge got its name from an earlier wooden bridge painted in the blue of the Dutch flag at the time. The current stone bridge from 1884 was inspired by the Pont Alexandre III in Paris.

Look out for the decorations: ships’ bows, fish and the imperial crown of Amsterdam. From here you have a great view of the Stopera and the Amstel in both directions.

On your cruise

This is stop 22 of 23 on the Friendship route. Before this you passed The Hermitage, and the boat continues towards The Mint Tower. Your skipper will point it out as you pass — keep your camera ready, because from the water you see details that are easily missed from the street.

Want to see it in person? All our cruises follow the heart of this route, and with a private cruise you can even ask your skipper to linger a little longer at your favourite spots.
