From the water
This is the most spectacular bridge of Amsterdam. If you have ever watched the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, you might have seen this bridge in the movie. But the story behind it is that there were two sisters who lived on different sides of the river, and they wanted to meet each other every day. So they started to build a bridge, but because of a lack of money the bridge was very thin, and that is where the name came from. This is also our love bridge, and we believe that if two people who love each other kiss on the bridge, or under the bridge, their love will last forever.
The story behind it
The Skinny Bridge is a white wooden drawbridge over the Amstel, first built in the 17th century and rebuilt several times since. According to legend, two sisters living on opposite sides of the river had it built so they could visit each other more easily.
The bridge is still opened by hand for passing boats, and at night it is lit by more than a thousand lights — one of the most romantic spots in the city.
On your cruise
This is stop 20 of 23 on the Friendship route. Before this you passed The Royal Theatre Carré, and the boat continues towards The Hermitage. Your skipper will point it out as you pass — keep your camera ready, because from the water you see details that are easily missed from the street.
Want to see it in person? All our cruises follow the heart of this route, and with a private cruise you can even ask your skipper to linger a little longer at your favourite spots.
